Senior Research (Behavioral) Scientist, Domestic Public Health
Location: Bethesda, Maryland

Job Description
URC seeks an individual who has domestic research experience to provide scientific advice and consultation on solutions to critical problems related to the behavioral aspects of physical activity and mental and physical health outcomes in the U.S., and research project monitoring and evaluation. The incumbent will collaborate with other staff on research protocol development, human subjects’ issues, and project implementation and evaluation.
Other responsibilities for the Senior Research Scientist might include, but are not limited to the following:
- Developing new behavioral research projects (e.g., a multi-site project to develop and evaluate promising behavioral interventions for high-risk groups)
- Leading the management and analysis of large, complex qualitative and quantitative data sets from selected research projects
- Directing research projects and managing the activities of research assistants, analysts and other staff
- Developing structured interview protocols and leading stakeholder interviews
- Contributing to questionnaire content and design
- Independently drafting and managing contract proposals and grant applications
- Communicating effectively with clients, consultants, and members of the research community, and gathering/assessing intelligence on upcoming research opportunities
- pparing original scientific research papers for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Developing psentations for scientific conferences and meetings
- Monitoring and oversight of financial and administrative aspects of ongoing projects
Minimum Qualifications
Qualified applicants will have a Ph.D. in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Candidates must have knowledge of behavioral and social science theory (including the social, community, and structural factors that affect health risks), behavioral and social science research methods, and invention research on the nature of lifestyle behaviors and their interaction with health and contemporary diseases. Candidates should have 5-10 years experience in clinical work with populations at risk for obesity or experience in obesity research.
Candidates should have experience with the design and execution of social science research and in publishing research results, with a strong career-appropriate record of peer-reviewed technical publications. Candidates must have strong writing and organizational skills and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SPSS or other statistical packages. The ability to work in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment is essential.
