Lifestyle Coach

Job Description: 

For more than 40 years, URC and CHS have had as their core missions, improving the quality of and access to health, social, educational, and vocational services in the Unites States and abroad. The URC-CHS U.S.-based Programs division embodies some of the best of both organizations’ areas of expertise and features local and national capacity in health communication and promotion and adult education and training.

CHS seeks several Lifestyle Coaches to deliver a type 2 diabetes prevention lifestyle intervention for adults who are prediabetic or at high risk for diabetes. Reporting to the Project Director, each Lifestyle Coach will provide support and guidance to participants in the lifestyle intervention program and implement a standard diabetes prevention lifestyle change curriculum.

These positions are available in the following locations: York County, PA, Worcester County, MD, Somerset County, MD, and Dorchester County, MD.

Job Responsibilities: 
  • Providing curriculum to class participants in effective, meaningful, and compelling ways
  • Encouraging group participation and interaction
  • Facilitating participants’ commitment to activities and retention of knowledge
  • Creating a motivating environment that is friendly and noncompetitive
  • Fostering relationships with and between program participants
  • Making learning a shared objective for the group
  • Preparing before each class (i.e., reviewing participants’ food and activity trackers, lesson plan, content for class, and making a reminder call to participants)
  • Being accessible to participants both before and after sessions to answer questions and follow up on any questions not addressed during class time
  • Offering makeup sessions
  • Supporting and encouraging goal setting on a weekly basis
  • Recording data for each participant (attendance, body weight, total weekly minutes of physical activity, etc.)
  • Complying with all applicable laws and regulations, including those governing privacy and data security
  • Contributing to the development of work plans
  • Supporting the planning and development of community-wide and health communication campaigns
  • Contributing to the development of culturally and linguistically appropriate tools, materials, and best practices for retaining participants
Job Requirements: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Experience in health education or behavior modification and group facilitation or training
  • Must role model a healthy lifestyle
  • Experience delivering facilitation that optimizes social interaction, shared learning, and group cohesion
  • Understanding of and experience overseeing participant safety-related issues related to program delivery
  • Ability to guide behavior change efforts in others without prescribing personal actions or solutions, so that participants increase their self-confidence and capacity to make and sustain positive lifestyle changes
  • Ability to empathize with participants who will likely experience difficulty and frustration with trying to adopt and sustain healthy lifestyle behavior changes and who may differ from the lifestyle coach in terms of weight status and level of commitment to living a healthy lifestyle
  • Ability to build strong relationships with individuals and build community within a group
  • Knowledge of basic health, nutrition, and fitness principles
  • Knowledge of behavior change principles
  • Experience using motivational interviewing techniques
  • Flexibility to work with people from all walks of life
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Attention to detail
  • Data collection experience
  • Ability to work independently and effectively establish priorities
  • Ability to maintain integrity of confidential information
