URC Shares Project Results at 2008 Global Health Council Conference
One of the leading events in the international health field, the Global Health Council (GHC) conference this year drew more than 2300 health professionals from around the world. The theme of the 35th annual conference held May 27-June 1, 2008 in Washington DC, was “Community Health: Delivering, Serving, Engaging, Leading.” URC/CHS, for a third year, was a sponsor of the conference, and several URC staff made presentations linked to the conference theme.
A workshop entitled “Quality Improvement for OVC Programs: Care that Counts” was presented by Dr. Lynne Miller Franco, of URC’s USAID Healthcare Improvement Project (HCI); Ms. Lori DiPrete Brown, Center for Global Health, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health; Dr. Florence Nyangara, Measure EVALUATION/Constella Futures; Ms. Kendra Blackett-Dibinga, Save the Children; and Ms. Samantha Dovey of HCI. The workshop was intended to inform staff and managers of programs that serve OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) about how to apply modern quality improvement approaches to raise the quality and effectiveness of services and included OVC quality improvement experiences from Tanzania, Namibia, and Ethiopia. A poster entitled “The Quality Improvement Initiative for OVC Programs” was also presented.
A panel entitled “Fueling the Future: Child Nutrition and Food Security” included a presentation by Ms. Elena Hurtado of the USAID-funded Calidad en Salud program, managed by URC. The presentation addressed growth monitoring and promotion of children younger than two years old, the key intervention in the Integrated Health Care for Women and Children at the Community (AINM-C) program adopted in 2002 by the Guatemalan Ministry of Health.
At a roundtable on Women's Health/Reproductive Health, Dr. Angélica Bixcul presented
“Mayan Auxiliary Nurse-Midwives Save Lives in Guatemala.” URC is working in close partnership with the Guatemalan Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National School of Nursing to train Mayan auxiliary nurse-midwives to detect obstetric complications, which cause high rates of maternal mortality throughout the country and most especially in the country's remote and underserved areas.
A poster entitled “Laboratory Quality Assessments to Improve ART Services in Developing Countries”
was presented by Dr. Beth Turesson, of HCI. The poster shared findings from a quality assessment conducted by URC in Uganda of laboratory processes in a sample of facilities participating in the ART Collaborative that HCI is supporting in Uganda.
