Health Care Accreditation Council Holds Inaugural Board Meeting
Jordan’s new Health Care Accreditation Council held its first board meeting on February 7, 2008. After a full day orientation which started with congratulatory remarks by the Minister of Health and the USAID Mission Director, the Assembly of shareholders meeting was held which appointed the board and Chairperson. The first Board Chairperson is Eng Said Darwazeh the former and longest tenured Minister of Health and a champion of accreditation since 2003.
In December 2007 the Ministry of Trade and Industry registered the Council as a private not-for-profit company and approved the 13 member board representing the private, public, military and university health sectors, insurance, professional councils and associations and consumers from business, finance, economics, law and education. The Council will establish healthcare standards, certify surveyors and do accreditation surveys, and prepare hospitals and primary healthcare facilities (PHC) facilities to meet standards. The project has obtained accreditation from the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) for the Jordanian Hospital Standards. PHC standards have also been developed. The first two hospitals will be ready for HCAC survey and accreditation in April 2008. The project is working to obtain ISQua accreditation of HCAC’s Surveyor Certification Program and the Council.
URC’s team is providing technical assistance in financial planning, human resource management, management systems development, marketing and business planning to the Health Care Accreditation Council, building its capacity to lead and manage a national health care accreditation program in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Royal Medical Services, university and private health services.
URC previously provided support to Jordan’s efforts to establish a national accreditation system under the three-year USAID-funded Jordan Health Care Accreditation Project which was part of the Partners for Health Reformplus (PHRplus) Project, on which URC served as a subcontractor to Abt Associates, Inc. Hospital standards were established and 17 pilot hospitals for the private, public, military, and university health sectors were prepared to meet the standards.
