Project Activities and Achievements in Swaziland, 2008
URC TB projects in Swaziland include the USAID Health Care Improvement Project (formerly the Quality Assurance Project) ( funded by USAID) and Increasing Counseling and Testing and Enhancing HIV/AIDS Communications in South Africa and Swaziland (funded by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Key URC activities include:
- An increasing proportion of co-infected patients are receiving Cotrimoxazole prophylaxis, up from 55% at the end of 2007 to 78% in 2008 for Manzini region, and from 45% to 86% in Hhohho region.
- Over 400 health workers trained in TB management, drug management, and CDC’s web-based electronic TB register
- Established TB-HIV core working committee with NTP representation to coordinate TB-related issues between programs
- Provided NTP with support to develop TB-HIV policy guidelines and strategic documents
- Organized TB-HIV stakeholders meeting
- Provided technical assistance for development of an emergency MDR TB plan and guidelines (which includes opening an MDR TB hospital) and assisted NTCP to project needs for pharmaceuticals and equipment as well as develop communication material and monitoring tools
- Advocacy and community mobilization efforts include supporting World TB Day activities, developing community training materials and designing a MDR/XDR awareness strategy.
- Support the MOHSW to implement the “three I’s” (Intensified TB case finding, Isoniazid preventive therapy, Infection control in health care settings)
