URC Commemorates World AIDS Day, December 1, 2007

The staff of University Research Co., LLC/Center for Human Services joins with colleagues and thousands of concerned organizations and individuals worldwide to commemorate World AIDS Day, December 1, 2007. The day is designated as a time to recognize achievements in the global battle against the epidemic as well as to focus on challenges and obstacles that remain to countries’ efforts to establish effective prevention and treatment programs. This year's theme of "Leadership" calls upon people everywhere to "be part of those who are building a better tomorrow."

URC activities to honor World AIDS Day:

  • In the department of Zou in Benin, the project is organizing a popular traditional media contest in one health zone, in collaboration with a local NGO and two local radio stations. Each of the three participating communes within the health zone will organize the qualifying round, and the final competition will be held in the city of Abomey.
  • In Jamaica, JA-STYLE staff are staffing and organizing events throughout the week as well as appearing in media spots with experts and broadcast personalities. Events taking place prior to and on World AIDS day at youth centers, schools, and other locations, include health and parenting fairs, workshops, an HIV Debate Competition, and an in-school intervention conducted in partnership with the MOH Hanover Health Department.  A National Church Service was conducted at Providence Methodist Church in Liguanea and a candlelight vigil will be held on December 1. On World AIDS Day, at Lucea Square in Hanover, a major event includes a discussion forum, debates, booth displays, HIV testing, and condom distribution. In addition, actors from the project's radio serial drama, "Outta Road" will perform audio skits. The Ministry of Education’s activities will take place on December 4.
  • In Nicaragua, URC will be supporting HIV/AIDS awareness activities in the San Carlos and Masaya Hospitals with a focus on the importance of reducing stigma and discrimination towards persons living with HIV/AIDS.  Events include promotional activities with Marimba music, treasure hunts, and showings of educational videos. Educational murals and posters will be placed throughout the hospitals.  Red ribbons will be given out and condoms distributed with instructions on how to correctly use them.  HIV/AIDs voluntary testing and counseling will be made available.
  • The Health Systems Strengthening Project in Cambodia (HSSC) contributes to efforts to reduce stigma and discrimination through supporting World AIDS Day events at both the national and provincial levels. This year, as a participant in the International Visitor Leadership Program organized by US Department of State, the HSSC HIV/AIDS Program Manager joined a panel interview with the Seattle Community Access Network and participated in the World AIDS Day campaign in Albany, New York.
