HCIP Wins 2009 National Health Information Awards
The 2009 National Health Information Awards Program recently recognized the Health Communications Initiative for the Prevention of Underage Alcohol Use (HCIP) for materials developed to prevent underage alcohol use.
HCIP is a project of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). URC, as subcontractor to ICF Macro on HCIP, supports SAMHSA’s national efforts to prevent underage alcohol use and played a key role in the development of these materials.
Reach Out Now curriculum materials developed for fifth- and sixth-grade teachers received a merit award in the Total Health Information Program category. Developed by CSAP in conjunction with Scholastic Inc., Reach Out Now features lesson plans, skill-building activity worksheets, and take-home materials for parents and children.
The Underage Drinking: Myths vs. Facts brochure, which received a merit award in the brochures and booklets category, dispels common myths about underage alcohol use and helps 9- to 15-year-olds understand the dangers associated with using alcohol.
A national panel of health information experts selected the winning products from more than 1,000 entries. The awards program—now in its 16th year—is coordinated by the Health Information Resource Center, a national clearinghouse for consumer health information programs and materials. The program recognizes the nation’s best consumer health information programs and materials. A list of the 2009 award winners is available at http://www.healthawards.com/.
