URC to Help Strengthen Non-Communicable Disease Services in Mongolia

URC will provide technical support to the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and Mongolia’s Ministry of Health (MOH) for the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA)/Mongolia Health Project. MCC awarded URC a contract, through URC's Mission Oriented Business Improvement Services mechanism, to provide technical assistance for up to five years.

URC’s work will reinforce MCC’s goal of reducing poverty and promoting sustainable economic growth through investments in health. Mongolia’s death rates from stroke and heart disease have risen precipitously over the past decade. Stroke is the leading cause of mortality there, and cardiovascular disease accounted for 30 percent of all deaths. In addition, Mongolia has the highest cervical cancer incidence rate in Eastern Asia: Every year, roughly 171 women in the country are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 92 die from the disease. The World Health Organization estimates that these rates could more than double by the year 2025.

URC will assist MCA’s Program Implementation Unit in developing a trial human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program to prevent cervical cancer. The trial, which will be administered to up to 10 percent of girls age 10-14 in Mongolia will serve as a basis for determining whether launching a nationwide campaign would be feasible and cost-effective. Further, URC will conduct an evaluation of cardiovascular disease and stroke prevention and care activities and recommend strategies for improving and scaling up the programs.
