Health Communications Initiative for the Prevention of Underage Alcohol Use
(Subcontractor to ORC Macro)
Clients: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP)
Under the Health Communications Initiative for the Prevention of Underage Alcohol Use (HCIP), URC continues to support SAMHSA’s national efforts to prevent underage alcohol use and promote The Surgeon General’s Call to Action To Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking. The HCIP contract, which covers one-year with four one-year options, was awarded to prime contractor Macro International Inc. by SAMHSA’s CSAP.
HCIP is a public information initiative that provides evidence-based underage alcohol use prevention strategies, information, messages, and materials to communities, educators, families, and professionals.
In collaboration with the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking, SAMHSA sponsored Town Hall Meetings (THMs) as part of a national effort to increase the understanding of underage drinking and its consequences and to encourage individuals, communities, educators, and families to address the problem. Building on the success of the 2006 THMs, the 2008 THMs are encouraging implementation of The Surgeon General’s Call to Action To Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking.
URC played a key role in the development of the 2008 THM materials including the creation of a fact-filled and persuasive presentation with talking points, the How To Conduct a THM training, and the Community Briefing Prevention Toolkit. In addition, URC provided technical assistance (TA) to community-based organizations, conducting THMs, as well as State and territory primary contacts.
URC continues to work in partnership with Macro International Inc. by following on earlier work conducted for SAMHSA’s Too Smart To Start Initiative (TSTS) and SAMHSA’s Reach Out Now Teach-In (RONTI) Initiative.
TSTS is a public education initiative, designed for 9- to 13-year-olds as well as their parents and caregivers, that provides science-based strategies and materials to help conduct underage alcohol use prevention programs and activities.
The RONTI Initiative organizes a nationwide annual event held at sites throughout the country to raise the awareness of youth and adults, particularly fifth- and sixth-grade students, their parents and teachers, on the risks and dangers of underage alcohol use.
