Alianzas Project, Strategic Alliances for Social Investment

Client: United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
(Prime Contractor: Research Triangle Institute)

Although Guatemala has implemented improvements in the quality and availability of heath care, nutrition, and education services, the country remains affected by high rates of maternal and infant mortality and chronic malnutrition and lags behind much of the region in provision of basic services to rural and indigenous populations. The private sector in Guatemala has begun to respond by directing substantial social investment funds and in-kind contributions to help fill the gap between the demand for and supply of basic services.

The purpose of the four-year Alianzas Project is to: (1) identify, develop, and manage public-private alliances that contribute to increased and improved social sector investments; (2) increase access and improve quality of basic education; and (3) increase use of quality maternal, child, and reproductive health services. The project team is leveraging USAID funds to draw in up to $20 million in local cash and in-kind contributions from the Guatemalan private sector and multinational corporations. Local funds finance subprojects aimed at improving basic health, nutrition, and education services.
