Quality Improvement

Using Evidence to Promote Positive Change

Quality improvement (QI) uses quantitative and qualitative methods to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and safety of health care delivery processes and systems, as well as the performance of human resources in delivering products and services.

The fundamental concept underlying improvement is that a system left unchanged can only be expected to continue to produce the same results it has been achieving. To achieve a new level of performance, it is essential to change the system. The methodology emphasizes changes in processes and systems of health care delivery in ways that enable the implementation of high impact, evidence-based interventions. It also identifies unnecessary, redundant, or incorrect parts of processes and then changes them to yield streamlined and efficient care delivery.

URC applies the main principles of QI, which include:

Focusing on the client
Making changes to systems of care delivery to yield improvement
Using change as a means to improvement
Setting up teams of health workers involved in care to test and implement changes

URC is pioneering a range of QI approaches and methodologies to improve the quality of care in developing countries, including chronic conditions care. In one of the most significant advances, we have adapted the collaborative model to the realities of resource-constrained settings. In addition, URC conducts laboratory assessments to identify areas for improvement and introduces lab-related quality improvement activities. URC has also developed a framework to define gaps in quality of antiretroviral therapy care that that separate current levels from quality services. We also provide support to developing country health care institutions to meet accreditation standards link to health care accreditation.
