Who We Are

History

University Research Co , LLC (URC) began operations in 1965 in the District of Columbia , focusing primarily on training and research. The company’s founding members, with roots in the Howard University School of Medicine and the Kennedy Administration, had developed advanced concepts of human services delivery that they wanted to put into practice. In its early years, URC worked primarily with the Federal Government, especially the Departments of Labor, Justice, and Health and Human Services (HHS).

In 1969, URC established its non-profit affiliate organization, the Center for Human Services (CHS), in order to expand into new service areas through grants. Throughout the 1970’s, URC grew rapidly, working in the areas of juvenile justice, health care and family planning, employment, substance abuse prevention, equal employment opportunity, law enforcement, criminal justice, and education.

Another key turning point for URC came in 1980 when it acquired an international health consulting firm, Family Health Care. This acquisition enabled URC to apply its skills and capabilities in training, research, and consulting to the international arena. Initial long-term projects in Tunisia and Senegal and an Indefinite Quantity Contract for health care delivery services with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) gave URC a solid foundation from which to grow internationally.

The 1980’s and 1990’s were decades of growth, both in the U.S. and internationally. Large contracts with HHS in health education and substance abuse prevention, with the Federal Aviation Administration in training, with USAID in primary health care and family planning operations research, service delivery, quality assurance, and health sector reform, and with many other clients converted URC into a leader in the provision of high quality consulting, research, and training services.
