MCC Reducing the Burden of HIV/AIDS and Health Systems Strengthening Requirement for Lesotho Compact Development
Lesotho struggles with low private sector job creation, structural unemployment, high inequality, and widespread poverty. The lack of private investment and growth is coupled with a high disease burden, particularly related to HIV/AIDS, as well as unsustainable health expenditures.
The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) awarded URC the five-year (2018-2023) “Reducing the Burden of HIV/AIDS and Health Systems Strengthening Requirement for Lesotho Compact Development” to contribute to strengthening the health system and improving economic opportunities for disadvantaged populations. The Project will support MCC’s development of a compact for Lesotho to improve economic growth and reduce poverty through increasing the effectiveness and accountability of policy planning, coordination, and execution.
Activities will assess key economic, social, and cultural constraints and opportunities to ensure implementation of contextually appropriate evidence-based interventions, including health systems strengthening support in the areas of governance, finance, service delivery, and strategic information. The Project will also assess institutional and programmatic approaches to increase economic participation by women and youth, particularly in key productive sectors (agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, creative industries including weaving, crafts, arts, painting, leather works, grass hats, ceramics, jewelry, fashion, etc., and the digital economy).
This project expands URC’s presence in Lesotho and the Southern Africa region and furthers work carried out in HIV/AIDS, health systems strengthening, and research and evaluation. Joining URC to carry out the work is Social Impact, a global management consulting firm with extensive involvement in HIV/AIDS monitoring, evaluation, strategic planning, and capacity building.
