Using Targeted Interventions to Improve the Quality of and Access to Laboratory Services in Uganda

The Strengthening Uganda's Systems for Treating AIDS Nationally (SUSTAIN) project, together with the Ministry of Health, the Central Public Health Laboratories (CPHL), and the USAID Targeted HIV/AIDS and Laboratory Services Project, conducted a laboratory strengthening needs assessment at SUSTAIN-supported hospitals in November/December 2010. This story details the interventions used at the Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital to improve the quality of and access to laboratory services at this site.

The five-year (2010–2015) United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Strengthening Uganda’s Systems for Treating AIDS Nationally (SUSTAIN) project is implemented by University Research Co., LLC (URC), with The AIDS Support Organization (TASO), Integrated Community Based Initiatives (ICOBI), Health Research, Inc. (HRI), and Initiatives Inc.
