Quality Improvement

URC has over 30 years of experience applying Quality Improvement (QI) methods to healthcare and has demonstrated that significant improvements in health care quality are attainable in even the most resource-constrained settings.

URC’s Quality & Performance Institute takes a leadership role in the approach to health care improvement and applies these main principles of QI:

  • Focusing on the client
  • Involving teams of health workers in testing changes to make health care better
  • Making changes to processes and systems of care delivery to yield improvement


What is quality improvement?

The fundamental concept underlying improvement is that a system left unchanged can only be expected to continue to produce the same results. To achieve better performance, one must change the system in ways that enable it to produce the improved result.

In health care, improvement science emphasizes changes in health care service delivery processes and systems in ways that will enable the implementation of high-impact, evidence-based interventions to achieve better results. By using the model for improvement (see figure on left), we can introduce changes to processes of health care delivery to yield effective and efficient care delivery.

Our assistance has included improvements at all levels of the system including communities, facilities (hospitals and health centers), district and province level improvements, and  national quality  program and policy design. URC also provides assistance in system and process redesign regulatory strategies such as health professions certification and licensure, healthcare accreditationchronic conditions, and collaborative improvement approaches.
