Building Human Resource Capacity to Support Prevention, Care and Treatment, Strategic Information, and Other HIV/AIDS Programs

Overview and Objectives

Worked with the Ministry of Health, Department of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care, to improve the quality and use of HIV prevention and care services and strengthen the delivery of routine HIV-testing strategies. The project evaluated existing programs and provided support to improve diagnosis and treatment services for multi-drug and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Project objectives were to:

  • Assist facilities in improving the quality of routine HIV-testing and post-test counseling
  • Conduct evaluations of current programmatic support and behavior change communication strategies
  • Expand access to high-quality child and adolescent counseling and testing services
  • Collect data on the epidemiology of support activities to reduce hazardous drinking and develop youth-targeted behavior change interventions
  • Implement intervention strategies in the Palapye and Letlhakeng districts as a result of conducting a situational assessment of alcohol use and abuse and programmatic responses in these districts

Achivements

  • Provided technical support for development of a model for countrywide expansion of routine HIV-testing strategies
  • Helped to develop guidelines for Child and Adolescent Counseling and Testing for HIV
  • Evaluated PEPFAR-supported training programs in prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS
  • Trained over 100 service providers in screening, brief interventions, and referral for harmful alcohol use
