Muskoka Initiative

Overview and Objectives

Two separate initiatives (Muskoka Initiative I & Muskoka Initiative II) where URC reduced maternal and newborn mortality and increased family planning uptake in two health zones (Couffo and Borgou) of Benin through clinical systems improvements and community engagement, with a focus on gender.

Specifically, URC improved the quality of reproductive health services at health facilities, community-based family planning promotion, and distribution and gender activities targeting family planning.

Achivements

  • Improved the provision of family planning counseling to Borgou health facility clients of reproductive age from 12% in May 2012 to 21% in November 2012;
  • Improved the provision of family planning counseling to Couffo health facility clients of reproductive age from 31% in May 2012 to 48% in November 2012;
  • Ensured that 85% of community leaders were trained on gender, family planning, and communication and applied their learning in the two months after the training; and
  • Provided material incentives to the top five health facilities in each intervention zone.
