CSAP Communications Team

This project was performed for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) division of SAMHSA. It is also referred to as the “Communications Training and Capacity Building & Prevention Education and Knowledge Application, Technical Assistance Contracts” project, or CCT.

This nationwide project served the communication needs of local, state, and national organizations in their efforts to prevent and reduce the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. URC helped organizations develop and implement multi-pronged communication strategies to combat misinformation and conflicting messages from the media that glamorize substance abuse. Drawing on established program models and research findings, URC staff partnered with client agencies to enable them to (1) use the health communication process and behavior change mode, (2) effectively involve audiences in developing culturally appropriate messages, and (3) plan effective media relations.
